First, for those of you out of the area, "Floatopias" are floating parties that draw thousands to Mission Bay in San Diego, CA. In order to get away from the ban on drinking alcohol on the beach, the creative minds of twenty- somethings created "Floatopias", where one could still drink alcohol but in the water.
Today the San Diego City Council closed the loophole that allowed imbibers to float on rafts and other devices just offshore. In their unanimous decision, the Council cited that lifeguards argued that the "booze soaked" parties were putting the particpants' lives in danger and kept them busy with dozens of water rescues.
Today's ordinance amends the alcohol prohibition to read that it is unlawful to consume alcohol while floating on inner tubes, rafts, surfboards, air mattresses and other floatation devices within one marine league, or about three nautical miles from the shoreline. Sailboats, motorboats and rowboats are exempt from the ban. Hmmm.... wonder if there will be an increased rental for these in the near future?

Where there's a will there's a way. I'm interested to hear what these twenty somethings come up with next. Please keep us posted!
Thanks Jennifer, I was impressed when they created the Floatopias, but now we will see what they come up with next! ~ Susan
Susan, I have to admit that I saw this ruling coming a mile away. Of course, the ruling still exempts boats. Hmmm, is a kayak a boat? A jet ski? a raft? It will be interesting to see the next evolution.
Like Jennifer said, when there is a will there is a way! Looks like Sessions Park is in for some helacious holidays.....
Susan, I had no idea that it was legal to drink on the water! Those creative 20 somethings;) I think it's safer to have them floating on tubes than driving boats though, don't you?
I know Stephanie, and Kate Sessions Park is one of my favorite places in the world! They are looking to ban alcohol there too because the revelers always leave their messes for someone else to clean up! :-( ~ Susan
Erika, I agree that I would rather have them floating around than driving a speed boat! ~ Susan
Susan,
I'm thinking snorkels and pouring right down the air tubes! Weight the booze slightly so it's out of sight, pull up as needed :)
Or minisubs that they can stand on. Portable islands.... They'll come up with something!
There you go givin' them youngsters some ideas! :-)
Susan,
Those youngsters will be much more creative than I could ever hope to be!
I've seen the pictures from a buddy of mine in NC where boat after boat is tied together for one big party. You'd swear that's all they do based on his Facebook page!
LOL! Years ago, I floated down the Colorado River starting in Yuma, but after an hour or so and a few objects floating by me that didn't look right, well you know... I got out, took a sanitizing shower and decided that was the end of my floating down the river with a bunch of drunk strangers! ~ Susan
Yikes! Cross floating down the CO River off the bucket list!
